Dog Door – How to Get the Right Size for Your Pet
If you’re installing a dog door in your house, be sure to pick the right size, material, locking settings, and color for your home.
Size cut is important – you want your dog to be comfortable when passing through the dog door
Dogs of various breeds and ages have varying heights and shoulder widths, and so do most dog doors. Do you have a dog one could mistake for a pony? You should consider getting the extra large doors then. You may want to think about a custom-order dog, especially if yours is really a big dog, with a capital B. Since the large dog doors usually already come at an extra large size, there’s not much adjustment to do.
If you don’t have a big, big dog then you’ll be looking at the common size range of dog doors, one that offers at least three size categories in the size cut guide – small, medium, and large. This means you need to measure your dog’s height (from foot to head while it’s standing on all fours) and the width of its shoulders. Don’t guess, go ahead and measure and check where that measurement falls under in the size cut guide. After you measure your dog’s relevant dimensions, follow the guide.
Only you, the pet owner, would be in a position to know just about everything about your dog – but if you make a mistake and get a smaller sized dog door measurement, you may inconvenience your pet. When your dog kneels and crawls just so it would fit through the dog door, that’s sign something went wrong with the installation.
You may already know this, but some pets tend to muscle their way through pet doors. This happens often especially when at play. With an ill-sized dog door, your pet might get injured or hurt needlessly. What if your dog was being chased by an enemy dog, or is running scared of an intruder? Kneeling to get through that door is a hassle.
Choose from hard or soft flaps
When you own a multitude of dogs and have a fenced backyard or garden, then your pets may have a play-run route around and even through your home. Use a soft flap if you have small dogs that look delicate or are old or recovering from injuries. For small home with over-energetic dogs that may abuse a soft flap, it’s recommended you use a hard flap.
Security concerns – why lock settings are vital for dog doors
What a dog owner, worried about his pet, may want is some added lock settings to the dog flap. You could, for instance, set up the lock so that when your dog returns at night your pet will be locked inside the house. If you want to vacuum the house, for example, you can do the reverse – so your dog will be locked out when it leaves through dog door. For added security, consider an automatic dog door. Your pet will be allowed to pass through the door since it unlocks in response only to your pet.
