Egg Donation Risks
Hello, I’m Carrie Bloedorn. I am the proprietor and program director of Eggspecting, Inc., an egg donation agency. I am also a regular egg donor. Today I would like to discuss with you about potential risks, unwanted effects, and problems to the donor during the egg donation exercise.
Although the risks to the donor are minimal, ahead of the beginning any egg donation cycle it is strongly advised that the egg donor seek the advice of her physician and discuss the potential unwanted effects, complications, and risks associated with the egg donation process.
An egg donor will undergo plenty of blood laboratory examinations and vaginal ultrasounds as required in several doctor’s visits as she starts the egg donation cycle. The only real probable risk after being withdrawn with blood could be some mild bruising. The vaginal ultrasounds can be mildly to moderately uncomfortable.
In the course of the suppression and stimulation phases of the egg donor cycle the donor will be taking a variety of medications including: birth control pills, antibiotics, and injectable fertility drugs.
One of the many unwanted effects, the normal ones that need consideration are: moodiness, cephalgia or headache, anaphylactic reaction, pain/ redness/swelling at the injection site, stomach pressure, bloating and nausea.
The egg donor is as well informed not to strenuous exercise or extreme activities, since these could cause torsion or twisting of the ovaries, resulting in severe abdominal pain.
In unusual instances egg donation risks can include the development of Ovarian Hyper-Stimulation Syndrome or (OHHS).
There is but less than 5% cases of OHHS in egg donors with the different severity degrees. This problem could the ovaries to enlarge resulting to greater odds of forming thrombus.
You can still find rare instances within this condition that leads fluid accumulation in the abdomen, lungs, or kidney failure that highly requires hospitalization and potential drainage of fluid.
In extremely rare cases the enlarged ovary could rupture thus requiring surgery. All OHHS situations can bring about loss of either ovaries.
However, its not all hyper stimulation cases demands significant medical intervention. According to one of my experiences, I was slightly hyper stimulated. I felt nauseated by this condition. I was very bloated and uncomfortable during the week leading up to retrieval and for about Seven days following the retrieval, but once my swelling and bloating subsided I felt good as new again, without any permanent or lasting effects from the slight hyper stimulation. Even if you don’t experience or manifest any problems during or after the procedure, it is vital to one egg donor to comply with the post retrieval follow up visit.
The risk of hyper stimulation decreases significantly if your retrieval occurs as planned and also the follicles are aspirated.
The aspiration of the follicles occurs throughout the trans vaginal ultrasound guided egg retrieval. The donor is asleep under mild sedation through the retrieval, and will not feel any effects until she awakens. The process could cause mild to moderate cramping and discomfort to the donor following on from the anesthesia is used up usually when she awakes.
Some risks of the egg retrieval procedure include: complications connected with anesthesia, bleeding, infection, and trouble for the blood vessels or bowels. Unwanted pregnancy may be possible due to instances when not every eggs are now being retrieved. In the event the donor were to take part in unprotected sex in the days after the retrieval it is possible for the donor to get pregnant.
Since egg donation is a new procedure, no definitive studies yet are connected to egg donation’s long term effects with infertility, cancer, or another significant health conditions. There could exist unknown egg donation risks that are not yet presently identified.
